How to contact?

Though I personally am not on facebook any longer, don't forget that there are a multitude of ways to contact me! Stop by my personal blog at BrightHaven Days (where I ramble about simplicity, recipes, photography and sometimes gardening), email, call, or visit the shop. If you have special requests, don't forget to send them our way! We've recently opened up a vintage gardening shop and Lady Amelia's Boudoir on etsy. We're busily refinishing furniture to expand our efforts in the salvage line as well. Ah, the life of a frugal thrifter!

The Home Gnome

Faux Laura Ashley, originally uploaded by Becca=the home gnome.

I do stay home most of the time--except when I'm madly thrifting. Today was a big shopping day for us here at the Home Gnome. Found some wonderful items and even a few things for ourselves--like this Eileen West gown! Came complete with a floor length wrapper. Really though, I think I'll be wearing it out in broad daylight...

Interested in more floral and boudoir items? Just starting up a fledgling enterprise: Lady Amelia's Boudoir. Come see what it's all about!

Garden Romance

Garden Romance, originally uploaded by Becca=the home gnome.

I love these pinks mixed together. My initial plan was to trash the peignoir and cut the magenta house robe into a bed jacket for my own use. However, after spending a goodly amount of time tucking lace and hand-sewing new buttonholes, I do believe this little garment has some life left in it. Either way, it makes a lovely color combo.

Boudoir Wear is lingerie that you simply will not find today. It's beautiful. It's elegant and glamorous. Check out some of these items at The Home Gnome.

Vintage Housewares

I don't know if many folks love vintage housewares much more than I do. I love pyrex, vintage tupperware, melmac, fireking and all kinds of depression glass. The brighter and sturdier the dish, the more I love it. It's really a shame that we finally found out all that aluminum stuff was so bad for us, or we would use it here at BrightHaven.

I have been taking some photos of the large collection we have here and at The Home Gnome. Don't forget, this stuff is for sale--so take a look at what we're asking. As always, we're open to bribes and/or trades!

Salome's Jewels

Salome's Jewels, originally uploaded by the home gnome.

I believe she's from the late 30s or 40s. Plaster work, excellent Grecian profile. She has been repainted in spots. Original paint in spots is simply gorgeous. Has anyone else ever seen a bust like this? I would love to be able to date it more accurately or find out the series of which she is part. Any clues?

Breaking the vintage code

Whether you sell vintage or buy vintage, at some time or another you are sure to have come across the phrases
  • as found
  • near mint
  • good
If you're like me, these words only mean what I know them to literally denote. When paired with vintage items, how does their definition change? Fortunately, I recently came across a swell guide to help both sellers and buyers of vintage clothing and other items. It's a condition chart with clear definitions for each identifying phrase. Take a look:
I have studied up on these terms and observed that a local vintage seller had labelled one of her dresses "as found." As found, hmmm? And so, I began searching for the many flaws I knew this dainty pink confection must have to deserve so condemning a label. After a cursory glance, I saw nothing wrong with it. Since the definition of as found is that a piece is damaged beyond repair, I was left with one conclusion: the seller didn't know what she was talking about! She knew the words, but not what they meant!

The point: hone your skills. Know what you mean when you say it. If you're a buyer, know what you're looking for. Carry this little chart around with you, if you must. Knowledge is power.

Be strong.
